Saving BSNL --Whose responsibility?

From www.fnto.org

01.07.2010:
Queries column - 1-7-2010
Whether BSNL is reaching the condition, where it will not be able to pay its workforce?
BSNL’s plus are “nil borrowing” and value of its huge assets, though the cash reserve is evaporating. As per Secretary DOT view (Balancesheet?), the financial position is not bad if not good. But this should not give room for any complacence. Further, we can demand and get the cooperation of the Govt. if both sides appreciate the concerns of each other. As far FNTO is concerned, we are an undying optimist.
Whether ITS are solely responsible for the present condition of the Company?
Introspection and soul searching both by ITS group and by those who are targeting the ITS are the dire needs of the hour.

From TEPU's Website

BSNL Financial crisis
Stand of TEPU
High time to stop the blame game. The responsibility to improve the Finance of BSNL is not of the management alone. Adequate capacity to achieve the target of 30 Million lines per year available. Prime Objective should be to ensure uninterrupted signal for mobile lines, timely attendance on customer complaints, competitive marketing strategy etc., are the need of the hour. Who can do it ? With resolute determination all have to March Ahead to place back BSNL in proper rails.

Indian Government Threatens to Ban Gmail, Skype and BlackBerry

Indian Government Threatens to Ban Gmail, Skype and BlackBerry

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 03:46 AM PDT

Bored with China and Pakistan banning web services left and right? Here is something new. Possibly feeling a bit left out, the Indian government has decided to join in on all the fun.

Apparently, the Indian security agencies are struggling to monitor the content being shared over Gmail, Skype and Blackberries due to their highly encrypted nature. According to The Hindu, a reputed daily newspaper in India, “Department of Telecom (DoT) will ask these companies to either ensure that data going through their networks be made available to security agencies in a readable format or face a ban from offering services in India.”

Indian security agencies are concerned that services like Skype are being used by terrorists to bypass monitoring mechanisms put in place for telephone calls. Skype and RIM (the Canadian manufacturer of BlackBerry handsets) will be given 15 days to respond, failing which services that do not allow lawful interception on a real-time basis would be banned. Google will also be asked to use encryption standards that can be monitored by the Government. However, the Government won’t impose any deadline on the search engine giant.

This is not the first time RIM has run into trouble with the Indian government. Back in 2008, there was a similar standoff. However, at that time, the Indian Government had claimed that all differences have been resolved.

Formal notices are expected to be served to all affected parties in the first week of July. While, a Google spokesperson declined to comment, Skype has come out and termed any potential ban as “a big step backwards”.

JAC --- convenor or disrupter?

Recently, The JAC met our Hon'ble Minister of communications, Sri A.Raja, at Coimbatore to stress our demands on reimbursement of spectrum charges to BSNL and the delay in implementing assurances given at the time of our strike in April, 2010. Sri Palanichamy, Circle working President of Tamilnadu FNTO and Sri Gopalakrishnan ,All India Organising Secretary, NFTE, duely nominated by FNTO and NFTE , were also in the JAC team that met the Minister. But BSNLEU in their website, while reporting the meeting with Minister, purposely avaoided mentioning the names of FNTO and NFTE representatives, most probably to create an impression in the minds of workers that they alone are working for it. It is a fair practice to mention all the names of the people whenever a joint representation or joint meeting is made. Floating all these etiquettes and omitting the names of the representatives of two major unions of the JAC is highly condemnable and regrettable. The convenoor, JAC is rather disrupting  than convening unity among the workers. .
